Restante is what is left over when you take away everything else. It can mean extra. In Mexico the word extra is also used to mean restante.
Restar is to subtract. What is left over after subtracting is the restante.

Here’s a word a saw the other day, afición. I had never seen or heard it before so I was curious.
Afición is liking or affection. Afecto is another word for this.

I had learned that gripe was more the word for the flu, but that it is also the word commonly used for a cold. This week I finally learned that catarro was a better word for the common cold.
Hinchazón
A lady came to see the doctor today and complained of hinchazón in her legs. They were swollen.
The verb is hincharse.
Derecho, derecha
When giving directions to someone, derecha is right and derecho is straight.
When talking about personal or legal rights, derechos is the correct word.
Entumecido
With the doctors today we dealt with a lot of numbness in hands and feet. Therefore I learned the word entumecido which is numb.
To go numb, or to become numb is entumecer.
Estornudar
Reaching into the medical vocabulary is always intimidating. This week I am assisting a medical team by doing some basic translating. It is amazing to me how that there are many common words we use almost every day in English that I have no idea as to how to say in Spanish.

Hipoteca is a mortgage. I have not been able to figure out what the root words for hipoteca means, but mortgage means ‘dead pledge.’
