When I first saw damnificados I was shocked to see it used in a newspaper headline. I immediately thought of our similar looking English word. Imagine my surprise when I looked up the word to find out it simply means victims. Particularly the newspaper was telling about victims of a hurricane.

Every use of the word I have seen happens to be in reference to a natural disaster. I am not sure if this is a requirement in the meaning of the word or not. I am curious if someone could leave a comment and let us know if that is true.
