This word is the word to discover in English. It has a direct correlation to the English word and meaning. But, whereas the English word is used almost exclusively to mean find, in Spanish it can also mean to uncover. This could be a usage of the word in English as well, but it would be rare to see it used in such a way.
I first encountered this word used this way in the story of the Bible when four men brought their paralytic friend to Jesus. They were unable to enter the house through traditional means and resorted to discover (uncover) the roof of the house. Here is the wording from Mark 2:4 in the Spanish Bible.
Y como no podían acercarse a él a causa de la multitud, descubrieron el techo de donde estaba…
In the English the word used is uncovered.
It carries with it the idea of pulling something apart to investigate…which would be very much like our word discover. Or like discovering an onion. Pulling it apart layer by layer.
This website will attempt to do that with different Spanish words and usages. This will be from the perspective of an English speaking person. Whereas a native Spanish speaker may find some of the comments here to be entertaining, I think many English speaking students of Spanish will find these discoveries to be quite informative.
