Sentido

Sentido is a word that has multiple meanings.

It is the participle for sentir, to feel. It can be used in just about any way we use feel in English. It can mean a physical touch type feel, or a feeling you get when you know something is right or wrong. Such as a perception.

As an adjective to sentir, it can mean that someone is sensitive.

It can be the noun used for senses, as in the five senses. To be conscious would be el sentido.

The way I often hear it used, and the way that is most notable because it sounds wrong, is with the idea of meaning or reason.

The most bizarre use of the word that I have heard is when used to talk about a one or two way street. De doble sentido would be a two way street and sentido único is a one way street.

There are plenty of other meanings for the word, these are but a few.

Víspera

in: Nouns

Víspera is the eve of something, such as Christmas eve or Thanksgiving eve. Víspera would be the afternoon or evening before an event.

Christmas eve and New Year’s eve have their own special names; nochebuena and nochevieja respectively.

Niño, Hombre, Varón

in: Nouns

Niño, hombre, varón are all types of men.

Niño is boy. Hombre is man.

Varón, you may be less familiar with, in general it means male. But it can also be used to mean a man of authority or respect.

Angosto

Angosto was a word that confused me when I first heard it. It means narrow and is often used to describe streets as being narrow. Even after hearing it often for 3+ years, I think they mean a wide road. I have to take a moment and correct myself mentally.

Angosto is narrow, ancho is wide.

Tarde o temprano

Tarde o temprano is an idiomatic expression that means sooner or later.

An example of its usage would be: Tarde o temprano los Delfines de Miami van a ganar un partido. Sooner or later the Miami Dolphins are going to win a game.

Inmundo

We run across the word inmundo quite a bit. It means something dirty or revolting. It is not just sucio, dirty, it is more, something vile and disgusting.

Particular

Often we are asked if we live in a casa rentada or casa particular. Particular here means a private home, or personally owned home.

It can also mean the same as it does in English, particular. More commonly though it is used to mean something that is private as opposed to commercial.
